“Sin Maiz no hay Pais” (Without corn there is no Mexico) : Workers and Labour Rebel Against NAFTA

PEJ News – Joan Russow
, Global Compliance Research Project – Gianajuato, Mexico – As of January 1st 2008, Mexican borders are open to US genetically engineered corn. Today it is reported in the Prensa that farmers and workers are marching against NAFTA, and are organizing a national strike.

www.PEJ.org In Mexico, today January 24, there was a press conference held by farmers and workers. In this press conference, they decried NAFTA and affirmed that NAFTA has contributed to over 30,000,000 citizens living in poverty.

On January 31, 2008, there will be a march to the Central square in Mexico city, where the participants will demand that NAFTA be renegotiated. It was also announced that there will be a call for a general strike on April 10.

They will be asking not only for a renegotiation of NAFTA but also for ensuring sovereignty over food security, and for the redesigning of rules for agricultural programs.

The protests are scheduled throughout Mexico, with the purpose of establishing a national block against Neo-liberal economics.

They will be demanding (i) that the 85% of farm workers who are currently outside of social programs be part of social programs, (ii) that there be a national program to eradicate hunger, and above all (iii) that there be national control and sovereignty over the production of food and energy.
